Instructions for Cleaning Your PAP and Accessories
Your CPAP mask, headgear, and tubing should be cleaned at least once a week
(or as necessary) to increase its lifespan and to prevent the build-up of body
oils, dust, dirt, and/or bacteria. Keep this instruction sheet inside a bathroom
cupboard for easy reference.
CLEANING: Once per week
- Disconnect the tubing from the PAP machine.
- Remove the exhalation valve and disassemble, and/or remove the mask.
- Disassemble any mask parts or pieces.
- Remove headgear from the mask.
- For humidifiers - disassemble per your therapist’s or manufacturer
instructions.
- Humidifier chambers should be emptied and cleaned everyday to prevent contamination
and transmission of airborne bacteria.
- Wash all of the above in a mild dish washing detergent (i.e. Ivory or anything
that does not contain skin softening agents) and warm water.
- Rinse thoroughly in clear water. Make sure no soap residue remains on any
surfaces or in any openings, especially in the tubing itself. You may attach
one end of the tubing to the faucet and allow clear water to run through it
for several minutes.
- Headgear may be washed in the washing machine but DO NOT DRY IT IN THE DRYER-
Let it air dry or place on paper towels.

Sanitizing and Deodorizing
Eliminate the HEADGEAR from the following procedure. Perform this after the
cleaning procedure.
- Soak all parts in a solution of 1 part white distilled
vinegar to 10 parts water for 20 minutes. An approximation to this mixture
would be 1/2 of a divided
kitchen sink filled with clear water and 2 cups of vinegar.
- Rinse thoroughly,
place all pieces on paper towels, and allow to dry completely. Tubing
can be hung over a showerhead to dry. Do not dry with a hair dryer!
- Alternatively,
you may use a cleaning product like Control III to sanitize and disinfect
your mask, cushion, nasal pillows and tubing
Filters
Check weekly to monthly, depending on environmental conditions
- Wash reusable
foam filters as explained in the cleaning procedures with mild soapy
water
- Replace pollen filters (white) if they appear dirty or worn.
